Working to the Thermography Standards
Industry standards are important to all aspects of modern life. They are important benchmarks of acceptable practice, ensuring that customers and service providers understand the expectations of the other. As thermographers it is important that we are able to consistently carry out our work in a methodical and logical way. It is crucial to the industry’s credibility that thermographers provide customers with a consistent product, and produce our work in a sensible out and logical manner.
Australia has not yet developed Thermography Standards, but that doesn’t mean we don’t work to a standard. Thermography has had a long history in more established markets, and these markets provide us with tried and tested standards, guidelines for Australian thermographers to adhere. There is a wealth of established practice provided by ISO, NFPA, ASTM, ASNT, ANSI/NETA, and Infraspection Institute.
“These standards give us accepted practices in specifying and safely performing thermography inspections. They cover equipment operation, temperature measurement and specific thermographic applications.”
IPI Learning operates internationally. This is reflected in our detailed knowledge and understanding of all the applicable thermography standards, no matter what country or geographic location.
Many multinational companies have a need for standardisation of practice across all their facilities, so it’s important to have a macro understanding of this now globalised industry.
Our teaching practice meets both ISO and ASNT thermography standards. In class we teach thermography practice standards including Infraspection Institute, ISO, NFPA, ASTM, and ANSI/NETA. These currently represent industry best practice.

AINDT has appointed IPI Learning as an approved training body (ATB) for the Level I Certified Infrared Training course (IRT Cat 1). This endorsement gives students the opportunity to apply for the AINDT thermography certification on top of the many other benefits of completing the infrared training course with IPI Learning.
AINDT stands as one of the leading technical societies in Australia with over 900 individual and company members. It plays a major role in the development and updating of standards through representation on appropriate Standards Australia industry panels.
