What’s real world thermography?

Practicing thermography in the real world involves a whole lot more than knowing how to operate a thermal imager and some theory on how infrared energy behaves. While that is an essential part of our training, we are heavily focused on real world challenges for thermographers. These include:

  • how to perform an infrared inspection in accordance with a standard,
  • how to properly document that information in a credible and reliable way,
  • how to develop an infrared inspection program that delivers real benefits to the end user
  • using equipment in hazardous locations or in close proximity to energised systems
  • how to verify your infrared data with other tools or complimentary technology
  • meeting regulatory requirements
  • developing a written practice
  • successful business modelling and how to quote
  • legal issues, insurances and liabilities surrounding thermography
  • how to properly sell your services or get recognition for your inspection program
  • how to survive in a market place that is proliferated with low cost thermal imagers.

 

We don’t do field trips

 

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is whether we conduct field trips during our courses. The answer is an outright NO.

“Field trips and real world encounters are fun, but waste an awful lot of valuable classroom time.”

Real world environments are noisy, dirty and unsafe, making it hard to communicate properly to students. We teach a diversity of applications including electrical, mechanical, imaging of composites, and energy loss, and it’s impossible to service everyone’s area of interest in a single site visit. Furthermore, most students work in these environments everyday and will have plenty of opportunity to test their skills after the course.

 

Simulation Rooms

Instead our training facility features a number of simulator rooms. We have 5 black body simulators (furnaces) coupled with an array of practical experiments and targets for learning the fundamentals of non-contact temperature measurement. Our practical experiments are designed to simulate the major error sources you will encounter in the field and allows operators to exercise their skills without having to leave the facility.

Blower Door Technology

For building diagnostic personnel we have installed the latest in Blower Door Technology to simulate windy conditions for enhanced imaging and to calculate air leakage in a structure. Our training room has been specifically created with intentional building defects so that students can identify missing and misapplied insulation, air leakage, internal framework and building details, while being guided by experienced thermographers.

IPI is not exclusively aligned with any infrared manufacturer or vendor. As such we provide a huge selection of thermal imagers for training and have a completely unbiased approach to equipment selection, use and applications. Unlike many manufacturer based training centres we are not there to promote a single brand use, but to provide unbiased quality training that presents the entire spectrum of the infrared market. Accordingly our training courses appeal to users of ALL brand of thermal imager, no matter what model or age.

Our wide range of training cameras encompasses all the major brands including Fluke, Flir, Testo, Trotec, SDS, SAT, Guide IR, Cox, Dali, KEII. Our trainers have had more than 20 years’ experience with all the major brands and can assist users with any camera they may own.

Complimentary Technologies

IPI also train students with a comprehensive range of complimentary technologies. A basic principal of an infrared inspection is that all data must be confirmed with invasive testing. To achieve this we utilise Airborne Ultrasound, Moisture Meters, Ammeters, Videoscopes, Waveform Analysers and a whole host of specialised equipment.

Working to the Standards

Australia has not yet developed standards related to thermal imaging inspections, but that doesn’t mean we don’t work to a standard. Thermography has had a long history in more established markets and there is a wealth of established practice provided by ISO, NFPA, ASTM, ASNT, ANSI/NETA, and Infraspection Institute.

Like many thermographers, Industrial Precision Instruments operates world-wide, and as such we have a detailed knowledge and understanding of all the applicable thermography standards, no matter what country or geographic location. Similarly, many multinational companies have a need for standardisation of practice across all their facilities, so it’s important to have a macro understanding of this now globalised industry.

Our teaching practice meets both ISO and ASNT standards, and in class we teach thermography practice standards including Infraspection Institute, ISO, NFPA, ASTM, and ANSI/NETA. These currently represent industry best practice.

 

Ongoing Support and Thermographer Resources

All students of our infrared training centre have access to a wide variety of thermographer support services. All IPI staff are Certified Infrared Thermographers and will be able to assist with your individual inquiries. Our Senior Trainers are available via phone or email any time to assist with advice for which there is NO CHARGE. We also host have several websites that provide additional information and resources to thermographers.
